The Rotary Club Dela Paz Marcos High, National Capital Region, Philippines holds the unofficial distinction of having the longest name for a Rotary Club – in the Philippines – and probably the entire world. Its name has 10 separate name/word components (11, if you include the word “of” and 12 if you separate “De” and “La”). This came about during the club’s application for membership, when the new club name rules stipulated that the place, city or region and country be included, in addition to a modifier, when needed. Quite an interesting turn of events for a club, which originally submitted its application with the simple name, Rotary Club of Marcos High – and was advised thereafter that “you cannot name your club after a road”.
Nevertheless, this development provided the founders with the opportunity to name the club after the barangay, rather than the city, in which its original headquarters are located – “Dela Paz”, interestingly translated to “Rotary Club of Peace” – highlighting the first of the 3 unique values they uphold as a club (Peace, Goodwill and Humility), and which is also one of Rotary’s 7 Areas of Focus (Peace and Conflict Resolution).

How we call ourselves
In spite of its long name, the Club and its members have an interesting brand and nickname, which they call themselves and each other with – MarcHi/s – pronounced as /mark/-/hai/. The nickname is a contraction of Marcos High and incidentally, a homophone of the title Marquis (or Marchion in Latin), a nobleman (or woman), whose role is to defend the frontiers or borders of a kingdom. Along these same lines, MarcHis’ role is to serve and empower the communities within the frontiers of their area, specifically Barangay Dela Paz in Pasig to Barangay Dela Paz in Antipolo – and along and around Marcos Highway, which directly connects both.

The vision and tagline for the Rotary Club Dela Paz Marcos High, is short, sweet and simple yet profoundly encompasses the heart and soul of the club’s mission: “United and Empowered To Empower Communities”. It is a statement, which was thoroughly discussed, dissected, distilled and finally crafted by a majority of its members participating in the strategic planning meetings of April 2020.
